In 1998, the Volkswagen Group purchased the trademark rights on the former car manufacturer Bugatti in order to revive the brand. Starting with the Bugatti EB118, they presented at various international auto shows a total of four 18-cylinder concept cars. At the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show, the first study of the Veyron was presented.

Pagani unveiled the final version of the Zonda, called Zonda Revolución to clients and family members during Vanishing Point 2013 - The International Pagani gathering. The central monocoque is carbon-titanium, the needle on the scale stops at 1070 kg. The Mercedes-AMG engine is an evolution of the Zonda R powerplant. The 6.0-liter V12 now develops an output of 800 hp (597 kW; 811 PS) and 730 N·m (540 lbf·ft) of torque, resulting in a power to weight ratio of 748 hp per tonne.

Gordon Murray insisted that the engine for this car be naturally aspirated to increase reliability and driver control. Turbochargers and superchargers increase power but they increase complexity and can decrease reliability as well as introducing an additional aspect of latency and loss of feedback. The ability of the driver to maintain maximum control of the engine is thus decreased.

Ferrari states that the car has a top speed exceeding 350 km/h (217 mph), and that it is capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in under three seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in under seven seconds, and a speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) in 15 seconds. Ferrari also claim that the car has lapped its Fiorano Test Circuit in under 1 minute and 20 seconds which is faster than any other road-legal car Ferrari has ever produced.
